Open Enrollment's final deadline is unsettled for the 2027 plan year
A federal rule that would have shortened ACA Open Enrollment's closing date from January 15 to December 15 was vacated by a federal judge in June 2026, and the case is now on appeal. Until this is resolved, we're not going to state a firm closing date on pages across this site — we'd rather point you to HealthCare.gov for the confirmed date once it's set than guess. What's not in question: Open Enrollment opens November 1 for the 2027 plan year, and outside that window you generally need a qualifying life event (see our life events guide) to enroll or change plans.
2026 rate increases are among the steepest in the country
Tennessee's ACA Marketplace insurers received a weighted average full-price rate increase of roughly 37.5% for 2026, driven largely by the December 2025 expiration of enhanced federal premium tax credits. About 77% of Tennessee Marketplace enrollees still qualify for a subsidy, averaging around $455 per month, which softens the increase for most households — but confirming your exact number with a fresh quote matters more this year than most. See our cost and subsidy guide for the full picture.
Open Enrollment opens November 1 — what to have ready
The 2027 Marketplace plan year opens for enrollment November 1. Before you sit down to shop or take a call from an agent, it helps to have last year's plan details on hand (if you're re-enrolling), your household size and estimated 2027 income for subsidy purposes, and a list of any doctors, specialists, or prescriptions you want to confirm are in-network before switching carriers. See our cost and subsidy guide for how premium tax credits are calculated, or jump straight to your county guide to see which carriers are active in your area.
Medicare Advantage Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 – December 7
If you're on Medicare, this is the annual window to switch Medicare Advantage plans, move between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare, or change Part D prescription drug coverage for the 2027 plan year — changes take effect January 1. Tennessee has a large, competitive Medicare Advantage market, and carrier lineups can shift year to year even if your ZIP code hasn't changed, so it's worth re-checking network and formulary details even if you plan to stay with your current plan. See our Medicare Advantage guide for how to compare plans by county.
Tax season: reconciling premium tax credits with Form 1095-A
If you had a Marketplace plan with a premium tax credit in 2026, you'll receive Form 1095-A in the mail or through your HealthCare.gov account, typically by late January. You'll need it to file your federal tax return — it reconciles the subsidy estimate used during the year against your actual 2026 household income. If your income came in higher than what you estimated at enrollment, you may owe some of the credit back; if it came in lower, you may get an additional credit. A tax preparer or the HealthCare.gov guidance on reconciliation can walk through the specifics for your household.
Tennessee remains a non-expansion state for Medicaid
As of this update, Tennessee is still one of ten states that has not expanded Medicaid eligibility under the ACA, which means coverage options for lower-income Tennesseans work differently here than in expansion states. See our TennCare and CoverKids eligibility guide for how this affects who qualifies, and why the ACA Marketplace ends up being the primary coverage path for many working-age Tennesseans without access to job-based coverage.
How we handle updates
This page covers recurring, predictable dates on the Tennessee health insurance calendar — enrollment windows, tax-season reconciliation, and rule changes that affect how pages elsewhere on this site are worded — rather than general industry news. When something changes that affects the accuracy of a specific guide, we update that guide directly rather than only noting it here. If you spot something on this site that conflicts with current official guidance, our Contact page is the fastest way to flag it.
